Week 02

"My invention (the motion picture camera) can be exploited...as a scientific curiosity, but apart from that it has no commercial value whatsoever."

-Auguste Lumière

Scene:#2 of 15
Shot:CU
Action:Still
Zoopraxinoscopes and zoetropes like the one seen above were early attempts at motion pictures. For this project by Elliot Schultz, discs were created with animated sequences embroidered onto their surface, to be played on standard turntables similar to vinyl records. The animation is activated when a strobe light illuminates the discs in sync with the embroidered frames of animation.

Week 02 History: Lumière & Edison

Watch these movies on the Lumière Brothers and Thomas Edison here then go to YouTube and find a video that you feel is like a modern version of the Lumière Brothers or Edison films. After finding your example of a modern (made in the last decade or so) Lumière or Edison film, click on the "D" to the left to go to Moodle and take part in the discussion forum. Make your post, then talk about how you feel about the Edison and Lumière samples found by your peers!

Project 1: "The Still Image Movie" Cont'd

At this point you should have all of your images selected and imported into your project. Watch the next few tutorials on the next tab on Premiere. The "Audio," "Basic Animation," and "Opacity & Transition" videos will help you dig in deeper.  You should be through Tutorial 07 before the end of this week.

Remember that all the tools you learn to use in any given non-linear editing program are only tools and can't magically make your work great. Learning to use the tools to make good decisions about how to keep your audience connected to the material is the real job!
