Week 05

“To watch his work is like being witness to the beginning of melody, or the first conscious use of the lever or the wheel...the birth of an art: and to realize that this is all the work of one man.”

–James Agee about D.W. Griffith

Scene:#5 of 15
Shot:Med
Action:Handheld
Like "Intolerance," "Broken Blossoms" is another plea for tolerance and understanding, and another denunciation of hypocrisy. Chinese-Born Cheng runs a small shop in the slums, where he meets Lucy, a downtrodden victim of her brutal father. Cheng attempts to shelter Lucy, but her father finds her and beats her to death for the offense of interracial romance (and, it is implied, out of incestuous jealousy). Cheng shoots down Burrows, then commits suicide. - John Steinle

Week 05 History: D.W. Griffith

Watch the History lecture on D.W. Griffith on the next tab. There is little doubt that D.W. Griffith had a profound influence on how feature-length movies were to be made to this very day. There is also a great deal of modern controversy over the racial representation of African Americans his films, particularly, Birth of a Nation (1915). After viewing the video on the history of this notorious filmmaker, click on the "D" to the left to go to Moodle and take part in the discussion forum.

Project 2: "Different Perspectives"

By selecting what shots to use and when, film editors make decisions on who and what the scene is about. Simply by choosing who gets close-ups, who we see reacting, and who we start and end the scene with. The editor can direct the audience and guide them emotionally through the film.

In this project, you will be given the media files to creat two different cuts. Each cut will represent the story from the two different student's points of view. Click on the "P" to link to Moodle where you will be able to download all the materials you will need and find the instructions (this may take awhile). Remember that you will likely need to revisit the tutorials as you proceed. This project will take 3 weeks to complete. Check the course calendar on Moodle for due dates.

Ready to get started? Great! First, you need to download the media for your project.

Week 05 Reading & Assignment

Click on the "R" to link to Moodle where you can access the assigned reading for Week 05.

You are required to find a copy of the film Inception (2010) and watch it before next week.  This film will help us discuss the idea of "perspective" in cinema.

Next week, we will have a separate discussion about the film that will help to talk about your new project.
