Week 06

"Eisenstein does it with cuts, Max Ophuls does it with fluid movement. Chaplin does it with nothing."

-Stanley Kubrick

"Metaphor in cinema is an impossible operation. It is one, which in order to function must pass through a transmutation into a second, literary form. The sense of Eisenstein’s metaphor “the workers are cattle” from "Strike," or Chaplin’s “the masses are sheep” from Modern Times are always linguistic in origin, and require an intellectual operation in order to gain significance. Thus, the juxtaposition of two single images never produces a third image, but only an idea, which if it to be understood needs to be transposed to a linguistic register." - RetinalEchos

Week 06 History: Sergei Eisentstein

This week we begin our discussion about Sergei Eisenstein. We'll start by talking about the spirit of the times that helped to define his work.

"Zeitgeist" is a popular term in the arts that helps us to understand what the driving forces in society and culture were at a given time in history or the present. In Eisenstein's case the forces of social class, revolution and war were at the heart of his Zeitgeist. In many films these inspirational forces are not as obvious as those that drove Eisenstein to create Battleship Potempkin. As we see in the Saw films, the valuation of life by insurance companies is part of the driving undercurrent of the film.

Project 2: "Different Perspectives" Cont'd

Continue to work to create two different cuts from the two character's perspectives in the provided media. Look for the reactions as a place to cut and try not to just "ping pong," or simply cut back and forth to each character. Remember, the audience wants to see how a character reacts to an action or piece of dialogue.

Project 2 will be turned in the Week 07 module where you will create and paste a link to your work, as well as look at each others' work.
